Local tradition places the Battle of Brunanburh nearby in 937, where King Æthelstan and his brother Edmund defeated a combined force of rival kings. St Andrew's Church occupies ground used since Saxon times, though the building itself comes from the 14th and 16th centuries. By 1801 Bebington was a small country hamlet of 273 people on the road linking Chester and Birkenhead, with up to 30 coaches passing each day until the New Chester Road opened in 1844. Footprints of an ancient reptile were discovered at Storeton Quarry in 1838. Bebington sandstone later went into Birkenhead Town Hall.
