The earliest record of the settlement, under the name Stratforde, dates from 1177. In 1311 St Mary's Church was authorised as a chapel of ease for the isolated hamlet. Bow joined the County of London in 1888 and the Metropolitan Borough of Poplar in 1900. Bow Common developed as an industrial area supplying London's gas and St Paul's Church there was rebuilt in 1960.
