A short history of E1W
Wapping was long thought to take its name from an Anglo-Saxon settlement of Waeppa's people, but later study favours a derivation from a word for marsh. It belonged to Stepney as both manor and parish. Efforts to drain the marsh and secure a river wall succeeded by 1600 and houses spread along the wall to give a long narrow settlement. By the 17th century it was split into two hamlets. In 1617 a chapel for St John the Baptist was erected and Wapping became a parish in 1694. Execution Dock was where pirates were hanged and a Marine Police Force was formed in 1798. St Katharine Docks, named after a 12th century hospital, were built from 1827 to a design by Thomas Telford and opened on 25 October 1828, after about 1,250 houses were demolished. Wartime bombing damaged both Wapping and St Katharine Docks. St Katharine Docks closed in 1968. The area has 307 listed buildings, including the Grade I Church of St George in the East.
