Stratford took its early importance from a Roman road that crossed the River Lea at a ford. A charter of 958 mentions a thorn tree in the area and in 1067 the name was recorded as Strætforda, meaning a ford on a Roman road. In 1110 Henry I's wife Matilda had an arched bridge built across the river, with a causeway running over the surrounding marshland. The Cistercians founded Stratford Langthorne Abbey in 1135 and Henry VIII dissolved it in 1538. In June 1648 a Royalist force won a minor battle at Bow Bridge and held Stratford for three days. A porcelain factory operated near the bridge after a process was patented in 1744. The railway arrived in 1839 and rapid growth followed. Stratford joined the new borough of Newham in 1965. Of 36 listed buildings nearby, the Church of All Saints is Grade I, while the Theatre Royal, University House and Abbey Mills Pumping Station are Grade II*.
