A short history of CR8

Russell Hill was known as Beggar's Thorn or Beggar's Bush from at least the 10th century. Purley takes its name from an estate recorded about 1200, when the abbot of the monastery of St Peter near Winchester granted it to William de Pirelea. The name probably meant a clearing where pear trees grew. In 1866 a school for warehousemen, clerks and drapers was built at Russell Hill, which was named after John Russell, 1st Earl Russell. William Webb bought farmland in the 1880s and developed the Webb Estate. Purley joined Croydon Rural District in 1894 and formed an urban district with Coulsdon in 1915. Rapid growth followed in the 1920s and 1930s. An air raid on 15 August 1940 destroyed factories near Croydon Airport and killed over sixty civilians. In 1965 the area passed to the London Borough of Croydon. Six listed buildings, all Grade II, lie nearby.
