A short history of SM6

Beddington began as a Late Bronze to Iron Age farmstead. Wallington's name comes from the Anglo Saxon Waletone, a settlement of Britons. Domesday Book of 1086 lists Wallington under William the Conqueror with 11 hides, 2 mills, 11 ploughs and 8 acres of meadow, rendering £10. Beddington is entered as Beddinton or Beddintone, where Robert de Watevile held a share under Richard de Tonebrige and Miles Crispin the remainder, with 6 hides, a church, 14 ploughs, 4 mills and 44 acres of meadow, rendering £19 10s. By the 13th century Wallington was called Hakebrug too. Nicholas Carew united two Beddington estates as Carew Manor in 1381. A railway station opened in 1847 and Nathaniel Bridges built villas in the 1860s. Wallington became a parish in 1867 and the Municipal Borough of Beddington and Wallington followed in 1936. There are 43 Grade II listed buildings.
