During the reign of Edward I the words "in Wharfedale" were added to distinguish it from other places of the same name. From the late 18th century it grew into an industrial village, with many residents working at Greenholme Mills, cotton mills driven by water from the River Wharfe. Burley belonged to Otley parish until 1866, when it became a civil parish in its own right. Council homes were built in the 1920s. The parish merged with Ilkley in 1937 and more council homes followed in the 1950s. Burley became a separate parish again in 2006.
