A short history of Ilkley
Flint arrowheads show people were in the Ilkley area from about 11,000 BC. Settlement has been continuous since around 3000 BC, leaving over 250 cup and ring marks on rock and the Twelve Apostles stone circle of the Early Bronze Age. A Roman fort near the centre may be Olicana of 79 AD although this is unconfirmed. The name comes from Old English words for Yllica's or Illica's woodland clearing. Christian worship on the church site dates to 627 AD. Three crosses of the 8th century survive. The Domesday Book of 1086 records Ilkley as Ilecliue, Illecliue, Illiclei and Illicleia, held by William de Percy. Ben Rhydding Hydro was built in 1843 and 1844 and Charles Darwin had hydropathic treatment in 1859. The railway arrived in 1865. Ilkley has 53 listed buildings, with Myddleton Lodge, Manor House, Heathcote and the three stone crosses at Grade I.
