A short history of Baildon

Rock carvings on Baildon Moor point to Bronze Age occupation while a bank called Soldier's Trench marks an Iron Age settlement. The name comes from the Old English bēgeldūn, which has been taken to describe a hill with a bend or a circle. The Domesday Book records the place as Beldone and Beldune. In 1066 it belonged to Gospatric, son of Arnketil, but by 1086 it had passed to Erneis of Buron. Two manor houses stood in Baildon, with one at Hall Cliffe and the other in the lower part of the settlement. Records of the Gypsy Parties reach back to 1770, when they were already described as an ancient custom. The Ambler family, prominent in the wool trade, built Westgate House in 1814. The parties lapsed after 1897 but were revived in 1929 and continued until the Second World War. The Hall Cliffe manor house was demolished in the 1960s.
