A short history of Anstey

Anstey began as an Angle settlement called Hanstige and later Anstige, a name meaning a narrow forest track, set between Charnwood Forest and Leicester Forest. Domesday Book of 1086 records it as a small farming community held by Hugh de Grandmesnil, castellan of Leicester. It seems to have grown from two settlement centres, one tied to Leicester Abbey and one to the Ferrers of Groby. Remains from the 12th century have been found in the village. The Martin family lived there from the 13th century until 1892. In 1431 William Porter supplied men and archers and in 1745 a foraging party from Bonnie Prince Charlie's army reached Anstey's commons. Hosiery work from the eighteenth century was followed by boot and shoe making and Anstey became its own parish in 1866. The village has 22 listed buildings, including Pack Horse Bridge at Grade II*.
