The Domesday Book lists the place as Burstalle, belonging to Hugh de Grandmesnil, with Willard holding the land on his behalf. The meadowland of 16 acres and a mill together were worth three ounces of gold. The Great Central Railway reached the village in 1899 and growth followed, with the population climbing from 611 in 1901 to over 11,000 by 2001. Building carried on into the 2000s with the Hallam Fields development starting in 2006. Nine listed buildings stand near the centre, all Grade II, among them Goscote Lodge, Goscote Hall and The Cottage.
