A short history of Groby
The '-by' ending of Groby suggests a link to Viking rule during the Danelaw period, though no firm explanation of the name exists. In 1066 Ulf was lord of Groby. The Domesday Book of 1086 records it as Grobi under Hugh de Grandmesnil, with land for 4 ploughs, 10 villagers, 1 freeman and 5 smallholders. Its value had risen from 20s to 60s. The Ferrers family held the estate until the Grey family took it over in 1445. The Grey family owned the Old Hall, built in the 15th century. Sir John Grey married Elizabeth Woodville, who after his death in battle married Edward IV. Lady Jane Grey, queen for nine days in 1553, spent her childhood at Bradgate Park. Thomas Grey signed the death warrant of Charles I in 1649. The church of St Philip and St James dates from 1840 and Bradgate House was completed in 1856. The estates were sold in 1925. The Old Hall is Grade II* among twelve listed buildings.
