A short history of Shotton

The earliest recorded form of the name is the Old English Cyllingas, which comes from the Welsh word for holly. The present English name probably means a farmstead on a steep slope or a farmstead in a woodland clearing. From the 18th century the settlement grew through coal mining and farming on reclaimed marshland. It also became a railway junction. Richard Willett's account of 1822 gives the spelling Kyllins and links it to a prominent old house in the parish. Hawarden Bridge was completed in 1889 as a swing bridge. John Summers & Sons established a steelworks in 1896 on a six-acre site and employed more than 13,000 people at its busiest. The mechanism that opened the bridge was put out of use in 1960. The works passed to the British Steel Corporation in 1967 and Tata Steel has owned it since 2006. Most of the plant lies across the river in Connah's Quay. Six Grade II listed buildings stand near the centre, including the Church of St Ethelwold.
