A short history of Hawarden
The name Hawarden comes from Old English words meaning high enclosure. The Normans recorded the place as Haordine, the chief manor of the Saxon hundred of Atiscros and William the Conqueror granted it to Hugh Lupus, after which Hawarden Castle was built. In 1157 Henry II camped on Saltney marsh and an English force was routed at Coed-Eulo in the parish. Llewellyn negotiated peace at the castle in 1264 and by 1280 it was a crown possession. Dafydd retook it in 1282, which led Edward to annex Wales. The Glynne family later acquired the castle and William Gladstone spent his later years there. He met Li Hongzhang in Hawarden in 1896 and left his library to the town, now Gladstone's Library. Of 35 listed buildings two are Grade I: St Deiniols Ash and St Deiniol's Library.
