A short history of Connah's Quay
The Domesday Book of 1086 records the settlement and its wood as Wepre, in the Hundred of Ati's Cross in Cheshire, with 6 households and woodland measuring half a league. The name Wepre may be a corruption of the older Wybre and it stayed in use into the modern era. Until the 18th century the area was fields with a handful of inhabitants. A New Cut channel to the sea was built in 1737 and new quays followed, including New Quay in 1773 and Connas Quay in 1791, which gave the town its present name. One account ties it to James Connah, who lived at the Quay House, while another points to a landlord of the Old Quay House. The silting of the Dee ended Chester's port activities and trade came to the docks. Railways arrived in the 19th century and a shipyard built the Kathleen & May. John Summers & Sons steelworks was founded in 1896. The port had virtually ceased trading by the late 1950s. There are 8 Grade II listed buildings, including the Church of St Mark and the Dock Basin.
