The de Valletorts received Trematon and had to provide the ferry boat. Saltash became a borough around the start of the 13th century. Roger de Valletort sold out to Richard, Earl of Cornwall in 1270. The Antony Passage ferry is recorded from 1324 and in 1351 Edward III attached St Stephen's church to the Deanery of Windsor. In 1549 Cornish rebels took Trematon Castle by treachery. A charter of 1584 says Essa was by then commonly called Saltash. The Guildhall dates from around 1780.
