A short history of Torpoint
Torpoint is a planned town of the eighteenth century, laid out on a grid that Reginald Pole Carew commissioned in 1774 within the Parish of Antony. His family later became the Carew Poles and still live at Antony House. The name is said to come from Tar Point, after early work on the western shore of the Hamoaze, though that was a nickname used by workers and the name actually means rocky headland. In 1796 the crew of the government vessel Viper fought a gun battle at Torpoint with a sizeable band of armed smugglers dealing in liquor. The clash left one person dead and five badly hurt. Workers from Devonport Dockyard settled in the town and so enlarged it. HMS Raleigh, the Royal Navy's main training establishment, also swelled the population. Ten listed buildings stand within half a mile of the centre, nine at Grade II and one at Grade II*, which is Tor House And Terrace Walls And Piers.
