A short history of Plymouth
Artefacts spanning the Bronze Age and the Middle Iron Age show that Mount Batten was a trading port. Around the start of the 11th century the Plym became clogged with silt, so seafarers and traders left Plympton and settled downriver at Sutton. The name Plym Mouth first appears in a record of 1211 and in 1254 Plympton Priory gained a charter for a weekly market and a yearly fair at Sutton. French attackers failed to enter the town in 1340 and Breton raiders burned it in 1403. Sutton became a borough in 1439 and was renamed Plymouth. An English fleet stationed here beat the Spanish Armada in 1588 and the Pilgrims set sail in 1620. A dockyard for the Royal Navy was founded in 1690. Neighbouring settlements were absorbed in 1914 and city status followed in 1928 before the Blitz caused heavy damage. There are 523 listed buildings nearby and the Grade I examples include Smeaton's Tower and Saltram House.
