A short history of Ventnor
Burial mounds on the nearby downs point to Bronze Age settlement and small communities followed in the Iron Age. Saint Boniface is thought to have preached in the neighbourhood during the eighth century. The area was recorded as Holeweia between 1189 and 1204 and as Holloway in 1553, while the present name probably comes from a family called Vintner. In the 13th century the manors of Holloway and Steephill belonged to the Lisle family. A watermill is first mentioned in 1327. By 1804 the place was a hamlet of fishermen's cottages. In 1820 John Hamborough and other building speculators bought both manors and James Clark's 1830 book on climate and disease then drew sick visitors, so the town grew quickly. The Ventnor Mercury began in 1853, the railway arrived in 1866 and the Royal Victoria Pier was authorised in 1870. Of 45 listed buildings near the centre, The Old Manor House is Grade II*.
