Palmerston Forts were added in the 1860s and the railway of 1864 brought Victorian visitors. The pier opened in 1878 and the Ocean Hotel in 1899. Sandown became an urban district in 1894. Dorothy O'Grady was arrested as a spy in 1939. Sandown Barrack Battery is a scheduled monument and the centre has six Grade II listed buildings.
