A short history of Shanklin

Before the Norman Conquest the settlement belonged to Algar and six further free men while King Edward the Confessor was overlord. The Domesday Book of 1086 records it as Sencliz or Senclis, with 17 households, divided between Jocelyn and William, sons of the Saxon landowner Azur. Shanklin became an urban district in 1894 and in 1933 that district was abolished to form Sandown-Shanklin. On 24 August 1940 Feldwebel Gerhardt Ebus crashed his heavily damaged Messerschmitt Bf109E into an old well at Greatwoods Copse south of the town. A section of the Operation Pluto fuel pipeline, which ran out from Shanklin to supply the D-Day beaches, remains in the chine.
