A short history of Bursledon

The settlement appears in the 12th century as Brixendona or Brixenden, by the 14th century as Burstlesden and by the 16th century as Bristelden. The name probably refers to a hill connected with a man named Beorhtsige. The waterside and woodland suited shipbuilding and a boatyard in Old Bursledon dating back centuries is where Henry VIII's fleet was built. Philemon Ewer ran a shipyard there in the 18th century and died in 1750 and the parish church holds a monument to him with a model of the Anson. George Parsons built naval ships from 1778 until 1807, including HMS Elephant in 1786, which took Nelson to the Battle of Copenhagen. A wooden toll bridge crossed the Hamble from 1783. Shipbuilding had ended by the 1870s and arable farming took over, especially strawberries. Bursledon has 23 listed buildings, among them the Church of St Leonard and Bursledon Windmill, both Grade II*.
