A short history of Whiteley

The land where Whiteley stands was once farmland and coppice, with Rookery, Yew Tree, Sweethills and Whiteley farms among those later taken over by the first phase of building. Barn Farmhouse in North Whiteley survives as a timber frame house from the seventeenth century with an eighteenth century extension. Eleven listed buildings lie within 0.8 miles of the centre, all Grade II, including a granary east of Rookery Farmhouse. During the Second World War the woods sheltered troops gathering for the move to northern France before D-Day and a War Department water tank remains near Bere Forest. In the early 1980s Hampshire County Council drew up proposals for the new community, named after the farm at its centre. Work on a business park got under way around the middle of that decade, with the first homes ready towards its end. Building slowed after the property crash of the mid-1990s and resumed in 1996. The section within Winchester district gained civil parish status in 2003. Redevelopment of Whiteley Village opened in 2014 and North Whiteley was approved in 2018.
