A short history of Marchwood
Roman activity is shown by coins found at Bury Farm and by a Roman road that ran through the area towards Nursling. The name most probably derives from Old English words for a wood where wild celery grew. The Domesday Book of 1086 records it as "Merceode", with the manor held by Alwin, whose father Wulfgeat held it before 1066. John de Romsey held the vill in 1316 and the manor became known as Marchwood Romsey. It passed through the Romsey, White and Rickman families and later reached the Saunders family. Cracknore was an old landing place for the Southampton ferry and Beacon Hill was a key beacon site. In 1843 Marchwood gained its church and became its own ecclesiastical parish, then a civil parish in 1894. Government gunpowder magazines stood here by the start of the 20th century. The wartime military port had a major part in the Normandy landings and the Royal Navy Ordnance Depot made the Mulberry harbours. Twelve Grade II listed buildings stand near the centre.

Outdoor sport is provided on several football pitches, alongside a tennis court and a skateboard area. Lloyds Recreation Ground and Cork Field are the named parks and open spaces and a number of children's playgrounds are also in the area.
