A short history of Leatherhead
An Anglo-Saxon settlement was probably founded east of the River Mole in the later 6th century. By the middle of the 9th century the settlement was the centre of a royal estate taking in Ashtead, Fetcham and Bookham. Alfred the Great's will of 880 left land at Leodridan to his son. The Domesday Book of 1086 lists Leret, held by Osbern de Ow under William I, with a church belonging to Ewell plus 40 acres valued at £1 a year. A first bridge over the Mole may date from around 1200. In 1266 Thorncroft manor was granted to Walter de Merton for his Oxford college, which held it until 1904. Turnpike roads and railways later brought newcomers. Thorncroft Manor and the Church of St Mary and St Nicholas are the two Grade II* buildings among 29 listed ones.
