A short history of Ashtead
Evidence of human activity in Ashtead reaches back to the Stone Age. A major Roman brickworks operated on Ashtead Common in the 1st and 2nd centuries AD. Domesday Book records the place as Stede, a word for a place, with the Canons of Bayeux holding it under the Bishop of Bayeux. The entry gives land of three hides plus a virgate, 16 ploughs, four acres of meadow and woodland for seven hogs, rendering £12 a year. The name is understood to mean a place of ash trees. The de Warenne family held the manor in the 12th century and the de Montfort family later received it. Ashtead men fought for Simon de Montfort between 1264 and 1267. The Crown regained the manor in 1543. Sir Robert Howard bought it in 1680 and built a new mansion. The railway opened in 1859 and the Ashtead Park estate broke up in the 1880s. Of 44 listed buildings three are Grade II*: Church of St Giles, Ashtead Park House and Ashtead Park Farm House.
