A written record from the 10th century names the place Ebesham. Chertsey Abbey owned it from Saxon days until some point before the middle of the 1500s. The Domesday Book of 1086 gives the name as Evesham and lists two mills, two churches, 24 acres of meadow and woodland for 20 hogs, with a yearly render of £17. The Oaks race began in 1779 and the Derby followed in 1780. The railway reached the town in 1847 and together with the division of the Epsom Court estate it encouraged growth.
