A short history of Ewell

Ewell takes its name from an Old English word for a river source or spring and it grew up where the chalk of the North Downs meets the clay to the north. Bronze Age remains have been found there and the Romans probably met an existing religious site on arrival. Stane Street bends slightly to pass the central spring. Domesday Book of 1086 records the place as Etwelle, held by William the Conqueror, with 13½ hides, 2 mills, 16 ploughs, 14 acres of meadow and woodland worth 111 hogs. It was attached to the manor of Osbert de Ow. Henry VIII began Nonsuch Palace nearby in 1538 and it was destroyed in the 17th century. Henry Lloyd was granted a market licence in 1618. Samuel Pepys wrote of the area between 1663 and 1665 as Yowell. Common fields were enclosed in 1801 and Thomas Calverley built Ewell Castle in 1814. Most of the town was built up with semi-detached housing in the 1930s. There are 86 listed buildings, all Grade II and Nonsuch Mansion is Grade II*.
