A short history of Ramsgate

Ramsgate started out as a small community of fishermen and farmers. St Augustine came ashore nearby in AD 597. The name comes from late Anglo-Saxon words meaning raven's gate, a reference to a gap in the cliffs. Records from around 1290 give Ramisgate and Raunsgate. By 1357 the area was called Ramesgate. The town was a limb of Sandwich within the Cinque Ports. Work on the harbour began in 1749 and ended around 1850. No other harbour in the United Kingdom is a Royal Harbour. Zeppelins and German torpedo boats attacked the town in the First World War. Janet Stancomb-Wills became its first woman Mayor in 1923. Deep Shelter tunnels opened on 1 June 1939. From 27 May 1940 the harbour assembled small craft for the Dunkirk evacuation. Of 421 listed buildings nearby, five are Grade I including The Grange.
