A short history of Broadstairs
The name Broadstairs refers to a former set of steps rising through the chalk cliff from the sands to a shrine of St Mary dating from the 11th century. St Peter's church is named in records of 1124 as a subsidiary place of worship attached to Minster in Thanet Priory and became a parish church in 1200. George Culmer cut Harbour Street into the chalk in 1538 and built Flint Gate in 1540 to guard against threats from the sea. In 1769 at Kingsgate a Revenue patrol ambushed John Snelling's smugglers in the Battle of Botany Bay. Flint Gate was restored in 1795 and renamed York Gate. Princess Victoria stayed at Pierremont Hall as a summer visitor from 1826 to 1836 and Charles Dickens favoured the town in the 1830s and 1840s. Near the centre stand 117 listed buildings with the Parish Church of St Peter the Apostle the highest graded at Grade II*.
