Margate appears in the Domesday Book of 1086 within the hundred of Thanet in Kent. It was a significant port by the Middle Ages. The name was written Meregate in 1264 and Margate in 1299. It is thought to refer to a gap in the cliffs where pools of water collect. The Battle of Margate, named after the town, ended in an English victory off Cadzand a day after it began. In the 15th century the town became a limb of Dover within the Cinque Ports. A timber-framed Tudor house in King Street dates from the 16th century. Holidaymakers came in numbers from the 18th century. Late in that century John Coakley Lettsom built the Royal Sea Bathing Hospital here, the earliest hospital of its type in Britain. Draper's Mill was built in 1845 and the Jubilee Clock Tower was completed in 1889.
