A short history of Chorleywood

Flint tools were being made at Chorleywood in the Palaeolithic period and the Romans later built a village there with a mill and a brewery. The name is thought to come from Anglo-Saxon words for a clearing or wood belonging to peasants. Edward the Confessor gave the place to the monastery of St Albans and by 1278 it was recorded as Bosco de Cherle. After the Dissolution of the Monasteries it passed to the Bishopric of London as Charleywoode and under Elizabeth I it became Crown property. The Turnpike Act of 1663 let locals charge travellers on the road from Hatfield to Reading. Quakers found sanctuary here and William Penn, who lived and married in Chorleywood, founded the Pennsylvania Colony with settlers from the area. John Barnes built Chorleywood House in 1822. Chorleywood became a separate ecclesiastical parish in 1845 and Lady Ela Sackville Russell bought the house in 1892. A separate civil parish followed in 1898. The Chorleywood bread process was developed in the early 1960s. The centre has 25 listed buildings including The Orchard at Grade I.
