A settlement existed in the Stone Age within the Colne Valley. In 793 King Offa of Mercia established the Abbey of St Albans and endowed it with five manors including Rickmansworth. The name comes from a Saxon landowner called Ryckmer joined to a word for a farm or stockade. The Domesday Book of 1086 records the Manor of Prichemaresworde and a water mill there called West Mill. Cardinal Wolsey held the Manor of le More as Abbot of St Albans. John Dickinson & Co. bought Batchworth Mill in 1820 and converted it to paper mills. A canal dispute over water levels ended in 1825 with an obelisk as a gauge. The parish was divided in 1851 and a railway to Watford opened in 1862. Growth was rapid in the Victorian era and the 1920s and 1930s. Listed buildings within 0.9 miles of the centre number 49 including the Grade II* Tithe Barn at Croxley Hall Farm.
