A short history of London Colney

The earliest record of Colney dates from the 1200s and the name comes from the River Colne combined with an Old English word for river. The form London Colney appears from 1555 and referred to the Colney along the route to London, which set it apart from Colney Street. The village stood on the edge of the London coal tax area of the 1860s and two boundary posts remain. It lay in the ancient parish of St Albans St Peter until 1894 when it joined the civil parish of St Peter Rural. On 12 May 1941 a German spy named Karel Richter parachuted down nearby and was taken into custody after two lorry drivers told Constable Alec Scott about a strange man. In 1947 London Colney became a separate civil parish. Within half a mile of the centre there are 20 listed buildings with All Saints Pastoral Centre and its chapel the only one at Grade II*. The Colney Chapel moated site is a scheduled monument.
