The Roman town of Verulamium grew from it, gaining the rank of municipium around AD 50 and becoming the second largest town in Roman Britain. Alban, the saint who gave St Albans its name, lived there in the 3rd or 4th century. Roman occupation ended between 400 and 450. Ulsinus founded the Benedictine abbey in 793 and St Albans School dates from 948. Work on the present abbey building began in 1077. Thomas Wolvey was hired between 1403 and 1412 to build the clock tower. The abbey became a parish church in 1539 and a cathedral in 1877. Within 1.5 miles of the centre are 289 listed buildings.
