A short history of Radlett
Stone Age flints show people lived around Radlett, though the land stayed densely wooded until the Middle Ages. The name probably comes from the Old English term rad-gelaete, a word for a place where roads meet. The settlement likely grew where the old route linking Aldenham and Shenley met Watling Street. Roman potteries operated between Radlett and Brockley Hill. Saxons had settled the area by the sixth century. The Domesday survey of 1086 records land east of Watling Street as Titeberst. Most land belonged to the Abbey of Westminster although St Albans claimed parts, with Geoffrey de Mandeville and Geoffrey de Bec as chief tenants. Radlett is first recorded in 1453. William Weare was murdered on Gills Hill Lane in 1823. The railway arrived in 1860 and the ecclesiastical parish was created in 1865. Handley Page opened an airfield in 1929 and it closed in 1970. Nine Grade II listed buildings stand near the centre.
