A short history of Baldock

People lived on the site of Baldock almost continuously from prehistoric times. Around 100 BC the local power base moved from the hillfort at Arbury Banks to the Baldock area, where a large Late Iron Age oppidum grew up and later became a sizeable Roman settlement. Use of the site lasted until the fifth or sixth century and the area stood unoccupied through the eleventh century, so Baldock has no Domesday Book entry. The Knights Templar founded the market town in the 1140s on part of the manor of Weston, land given by Gilbert de Clare, the first Earl of Pembroke, who died in 1148. It is first recorded as Baldac in 1168. The modern layout of the centre dates from the sixteenth century, when malting began and Butcher's Row was demolished in the 1770s. The Wynn almshouses were founded in 1621. There are 102 listed buildings, of which the Church of Saint Mary is Grade I.
