A short history of Letchworth

A hill fort on Wilbury Hill is thought to date from about 700 BC and seems to have remained in use until the Romans conquered Britain. The name comes from Old English words for a farm within an enclosure. The Domesday Book of 1086 records the place as Leceworde, with a priest, a slave, four cottagers and nine villager households. The parish church dates from the 12th century. Ebenezer Howard wrote his garden city proposal in 1898 and First Garden City Limited was formed on 1 September 1903 to buy an estate of 3,818 acres. Raymond Unwin and Barry Parker won the competition for the layout in 1904 and the first new houses were occupied that July. A takeover of the company in 1960 led to the estate passing to a corporation in 1963 and a charitable foundation in 1995. Of 91 listed buildings nearby, seven are Grade II*, including Tanglewood, Arunside and The Cloisters.
