A short history of Arlesey

The name Arlesey comes from the Old English Aelfricsēg, meaning Aelfric's island. Iron Age settlement left evidence east of the town. Etonbury, a medieval manorial complex to the north, may have begun as an inland harbour and seems to have served as a Danish camp from the 9th century. It was a manor by 1086, when the Domesday Book mentions Arlesey and its manor house was described as utterly decayed in 1566. The railway reached Arlesey in 1850 and the Three Counties Asylum opened just east of the town in 1860, closing in 1999 as Fairfield Hospital. Five brickworks made Arlesey White bricks by 1900. In 1943 a Halifax bomber hit a brickworks chimney and in 1944 a Hudson crashed on the Stotfold road. Three Grade II listed buildings stand near the centre.
