A short history of Perton
The name Perton is said to come from "Pear Town", after the pear trees that grew there. The manor belonged to Edward the Confessor and then to the Abbot of Westminster until 1162, when the monarch took it and gave it to Lord William Perton. A rabbit warren was created in 1260 and John de Perton held the manor in return for eight days of service against the Welsh. James Leveson, a Wolverhampton merchant, bought it in 1523 and Richard Leveson later fought the Spanish Armada and became Vice Admiral of England in 1604. Sir Walter Wrottesley bought it in 1662 and his family kept it until the 1960s. Fern Fields was a landing ground for No 38 Squadron in the First World War. RAF Perton began in the Second World War as a training aerodrome where the Dutch Princess Irene Brigade trained. Refugees and then families lived at the camp until 1962.
