A short history of Wombourne

Wombourne has Anglo-Saxon origins and lay within the kingdom of Mercia. Its name draws on the Old English word burna, meaning a stream. The Domesday Book of 1086 records the village, held before the Conquest by Thorsten. By then William Fitz Ansculf held seven hides, some let to Ralph of Wombourne, with eight ploughs, 13 villagers, a priest and two mills, worth £3. A church dedicated to St Benedict Biscop was raised or renewed by the Priors of Dudley around 1170 and its 14th-century west tower survives. Samuel Hellier of the Wodehouse was knighted in 1762. The Staffordshire and Worcestershire Canal opened in 1772, with locks at two sites, the Bratch and Bumble Hole. Hellier died in 1784. By 1851 nail makers occupied much of the village. George Edmund Street rebuilt most of the church in 1866 and 1867. Of 13 listed buildings near the centre one is Grade II*, The Bratch Water Pumping Station.
