A short history of Codsall
The Domesday Book of 1086 recorded six people at Codsall. The name is thought to come from Old English Cod's Halh, a corner of land owned by a man named Cod. St Nicholas' Church is the oldest building and has a Norman doorway thought to be 11th century. From medieval times the hilltop around it was the village centre, with a windmill, pond, forge, bakery and public house. The railway station of 1849 drew trade towards Station Road, where large houses were built for Wolverhampton and Black Country businessmen. After 1900 activity moved towards the Square as Baker's Nurseries grew over the former Old Hall Farm land. In the 1920s buses, electricity and a deep sewer helped turn the village into a dormitory for Wolverhampton. Ten listed buildings stand near the centre, the highest graded being the Church of St Nicholas at Grade II*.
