A short history of West Kirby
The name West Kirby comes from the Viking name Kirkjubyr, meaning a settlement with a church. The word West was added to separate it from the other Kirkby in Wirral, now Wallasey. The earliest known use of that form dates to 1285, when it was written as West Kyrkeby with the district given as Wirhale. The old village grew up around St. Bridget's Church. A wall built in 1899 created the West Kirby Marine Lake. In 1922 Charles Sargeant Jagger designed the Hoylake and West Kirby War Memorial, which is listed Grade II*. West Kirby lay in Cheshire until it became part of Merseyside in 1974. The lake wall suffered a major leak in 1985 and a wider lake was built on the site. Seven listed buildings stand within 0.7 miles of the centre. Six are Grade II and the war memorial is the highest graded. The scheduled monument Grange Beacon on Column Road, Hoylake also lies within that distance.
