A short history of Greasby

Excavations between 1987 and 1990 found Merseyside's oldest known settlement at Greasby, where a stone and pebble floor suggests use by nomadic hunters. Burnt hazelnut shells dated it to between 8300 and 8500 BC. The village later began as an Anglo Saxon settlement, recorded in the Domesday Book as Gravesberie, from Old English words for a grove and a fortified place. Old Norse speakers in Wirral reshaped the name into Greasby. Before 1066 a man named Dunning owned the land, which then passed to Hugh d'Avranches. By 1086 Nigel de Burcy held it, with eight households. Greasby was a township across the parishes of Thurstaston and West Kirby and a civil parish from 1866 until 1974, when it moved from Cheshire to Merseyside. Building after the Second World War spread over farmland. Six Grade II listed buildings include The Manor and Greasby Old Hall.
