A short history of Rawmarsh
Rawmarsh is recorded in the Domesday Book as Rodemesc. The name joins an Old Norse word for red to an Old English word for marsh, pointing to the red sandstone and marl of the ground and local clays gave the area a name for potteries. A church has stood here since Norman times, around 1127 and the earliest recorded rector, William de Sutton, was instituted in 1227. The name appeared as Raumersche in 1355. Monuments in the church remember John Darley of Kilnhurst (1616) and Lady Middleton with her children (1667), who spent a period at Aldwarke Hall. The church took its present form in 1838 to designs by James Pigott Pritchett. Its tower began to collapse in 1869 and was rebuilt. By the start of the 20th century the parish was described as increasing and took in Parkgate, Stubbin and Upper Haugh. Five listed buildings stand near the centre, with St Marys Rectory the highest graded at Grade II*.
