A short history of Wath upon Dearne
Wath upon Dearne dates from Norman times and the Domesday Book of 1086 records it as Wad and Waith. The name has been linked to Latin and Old Norse words meaning a ford or wading place and a ford crossed the River Dearne north of the settlement. For some centuries it remained rural, at the meeting of the old road from Doncaster to Barnsley and the road from Rotherham to Pontefract. A royal charter of 1312 to 1313 allowed a market each Tuesday and a fair of two days every year but both soon lapsed. Between 1798 and 1804 the Dearne and Dove Canal was opened section by section to reach the collieries. The market was revived in 1814. Coal mining then transformed the town through the 19th and 20th centuries and a large marshalling yard was built in 1907. Wath Hall housed local government from 1892 to 1974. Nineteen listed buildings stand near the centre, with the Church of All Saints the only Grade I.
