A short history of Rotherham

Evidence of Iron Age and Roman settlement has been found around Rotherham, including a small Roman fort at Templeborough. An Anglo-Saxon settlement with a parish grew near the Roman ford over the Don. The name means homestead on the Rother, a river name of Brittonic origin. The 1086 Domesday Book records a manor held by Hakon in 1066 and tenanted by Robert de Mortain, with Nigel Fossard as absentee lord. It lists eight villagers, three smallholders, a priest, a church, meadow, woodland and a mill valued at half a pound. In the mid 13th century possessions in the town passed to Rufford Abbey. Archbishop Thomas Rotherham instigated the College of Jesus in the 1480s and it was dissolved in 1547. Mary, Queen of Scots stayed two nights in January 1569. Coal and iron shaped the town from the late 18th century. The Parkgate Ironworks was established in 1823. Fifty listed buildings stand near the centre, with Grade I status for the Chapel of Our Lady, the Church of All Saints and Rotherham Bridge.
