A short history of Mexborough
Mexborough takes its name from a personal name of Old English or Old Norse origin joined to an Old English word for a fortified place. A dyke known as the Roman Ridge ends at the town and it may date from the 1st century AD or from after the 5th century. The Domesday Book of 1086 records the place as Mechesburg and says the Saxon lords Wulfheah and Ulfkil held the area before the Conquest, after which it passed to the Norman baron Roger de Busli. An earthwork in Castle Park is thought to be the remains of an 11th century motte-and-bailey castle. The Church of St John the Baptist, Grade I listed, has elements from the 12th century and the town has three listed buildings in all. The South Yorkshire, Doncaster and Goole Railway arrived in 1850 and coal mining, quarrying, brickworks and pottery drove growth. The Mexborough Cooperative Society began in 1861. Montagu Hospital's first stone was laid in 1904. Stan Laurel stayed in the town after a performance on 9 December 1907.
