A short history of Conisbrough

The Church of St Peter is probably from the 8th century and no other building in South Yorkshire is thought to be older. The name derives from the Old English Cyningesburh, meaning a king's stronghold and appears in records from about 1000. Wulfric Spott bequeathed Conisbrough in a will of about 1003, when it seems to have been the hub of a large estate that had once been royal and reached Hatfield Chase. The manor returned to the crown under Harold II. By the Norman Conquest the Lord of Conisbrough held 28 townships across what is now South Yorkshire and William the Conqueror granted the whole lordship to William de Warenne. St Peter's was enlarged in the twelfth century. The Kilner company set up a glassworks in 1863 and went bankrupt in 1937. Conisbrough Urban District ran from 1921 to 1974. Twelve listed buildings stand near the centre and two are Grade I: Conisbrough Castle and the Church of St Peter.
