A short history of Sedgley
The name Sedgley first appears in a charter of 985 from King Æthelred to Lady Wulfrūn, describing the Wolverhampton border. It comes from Old English, a personal name Secg joined to a word for a woodland clearing. The Domesday Book of 1086 records Sedgley as held by William Fitz-Ansculf, Lord of Dudley. Medieval Sedgley was a scatter of farming communities until the working of coal and limestone began and by the 18th century it produced iron and brick. The Earl of Dudley paid for the present All Saints' Church, completed in 1829. Growth was rapid in the early 20th century partly because of Baggeridge Colliery. In 1926 the east of the district passed to Dudley for council housing. Ten Grade II listed buildings stand near the centre including Ruiton Windmill and Ruiton Chapel.
